Buzios and Rio de Janeiro

The name Rio de Janeiro exempts any comments. Blessed by God and naturally beautiful, Rio is a marvelous city.

Corcovado Rio de Janeiro BrazilRio de Janeiro is one of the largest and most culturally diverse cities in Brazil. Only a few hours from Buzios, Rio is known for its lovely scenic vistas, couture shopping and a bubbling and vibrant nightlife.

Favorite Attractions

One of the most popular attractions is the Statue of Christ at Corcovado. The statue is over 2000 feet above sea level and looks out over an incredible panoramic landscape of mountains, forests and oceans. Sugar Loaf Mountain is a popular daytime trek as the view from the top of the mountain is amazing. The scenic tramline between Carioca Station and the Santa Teresa District is great fun. The tram sits on the Lapa Arches, a two tiered structure that was designed to bring water to Rio during colonial times. For the nature lover, stop in at Jardim Botânico or Tijuca National Park.

Rio de Janeiro is considered the mecca for the shopaholic in Brazil. Some of the best shopping is in Barra and the South Zone. The South Zone shopping malls includes Rio Sul and Shoppingda Gavea. There are also smaller malls and delightful boutiques that run along Ipanema beach. Barra has three well-known shopping malls, Barra Shopping, Downtown and Via Parque. Stop in the Casa Shopping for home décor. For the antique lover there are weekend flea markets and fairs in Praca 15 and the Hippie Fair at General Osorio Square in Ipanema, every sunday.

Of course the most famous places to visit in Rio are its beaches. The two best known are Copacabana Beach and Ipanema Beach. Copacabana beach stretches for almost 2.5 miles or 4 km. It is also filled with volleyball nets, football courts and training equipment. Considered a top urban beach, Ipanema is one of the best spots for people watching. The scenery is also quite lovely with the emerald green waters in front of you and the tall mountains behind you. There are several vendors along the shoreline to provide the visitor with snacks and drinks. Expect to see volleyball and footballs games going on up and down the beach.

Rio de Janeiro is quite a party city. Bars, restaurants and dance clubs can be found in every district. The Plataform Samba Show showcases the history of music and dance in Brazil. If you enjoy dancing the night away, stop in at Rio Scenarium. It was once a Lapa antique dealer and is known for its eclectic collection of items that sway from the dance floor ceilings. Be sure to make reservations so you get a table next to the stage. If you have a chance, get tickets to a concert at the Teatro Municipal. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in Rio and the acoustics are first rate.
Rio de Janeiro is a very cosmopolitan city that still manages to maintain that old world charm. The colonial buildings speak to yesterday while the modern skyscrapers hold the promise of an exciting future.
